Further to the BBC headline this morning Depression is ‘over-diagnosed’ I have received an interesting response to the article from the mental health charity MIND :

In relation to the BBC News article, Mind would be in agreement with what SANE said in the article. We at Mind are concerned that, due to the stigma surrounding mental health, people tend not to come forward to seek treatment for their mental health problems.  Doctors also have to follow strict guidance when giving a diagnosis and so we do not feel that there is a concern that depression is being over-diagnosed.

We know  the article highlighted the fact that prescriptions for anti-depressants have reached record levels, but at Mind we do not feel this is because there are more cases of depression, but may be a result of the fact that GPs tend to prescribe anti-depressants for a range of mental health problems as there are no other treatment choices.
